![]() The difficulty will get even denser with you are introduced to enemies that can go through the background or retaliate from attempts to avoid. There are three stages to each type of underground fortress you discover, all comes with their very own theme and unique set of challenges. I guess I could nitpick and say that there should be more skills to choose from, but I really can’t complain on something this great!ĭownwell only gets even better and harder the further you descend. You have the free power of choosing which suits your play style, but you are never able to use the same line-up of upgrades, two playthroughs in a row. One might give you a drone to assist you into combat, while another could turn collected gems into bullets firing upwards. What supports this is a choice-driven upgrade system, where after every complete stage, you are given the option of choosing one out of three upgrades that do way more than buff up stats. These rewards are alright, but you are likely not to pay too much attention to them, as you could just settle in for the default options and the experience would hardly feel different with these additions, but you wouldn’t really care, because Downwell is irresistible, especially taking into count how well the procedural generation does at not making you feel like you are having the same run twice and you’ll have that urge of “one last run” to see how much better you’ll get from the next playthrough or against your friends and foes on the leaderboard. These factors contribute to a leveling system that will grant you new color pallets and play styles to customize your playthroughs a little. When you meet your tragic end, you are rewarded from how far you progressed, enemies you destroyed, gems you collected and points you scored. You feel amazing just destroying enemies and causing havoc in a beautiful combo, way to much to afford putting the game down even after you die. ![]() What makes Downwell such an unforgettable experience is when you combine speed and precision to dash down the dangerous passage. I may fail, but I am always tempted to try try try again! You could attempt to rush through the deadly caverns, but trying so will most likely end in an unfortunate failure as you tend to drop really fast with monsters coming after you from above and traps below, awaiting for you to land right in.Īnother thing to keep in mind are the loot caverns containing gem stashes used for currency, gun modules to add some explosive firepower and shops to purchase health or charge bonuses to regenerate or upgrade your health status, making things slightly easier for whenever you are about to have your rear handed to you (or just me since I’m not very excellent at the game). You can only fire your blasters while in mid-air, using the jump button, but as the title references, you can only fire and speed downwards as jumping back up is next to impossible, but that’s only supports the enjoyment and challenge of having a one way down situation. You move to the left and right of the close-quarter cavern, strapped with gunboots that run on infinite ammunition, so long as you recharge by landing on a platform. ![]() You are this brave white blob guy thing who will descend to what is the longest procedurally-generated well I have ever seen, filled with an excellent variety of traps, caves and enemies that you must always be fully aware of. Instead of getting enraged at starting over, I just reflected at how much destruction I’ve created and how many gems I’ve gathered in a not very lengthy time, having one of the best indie game experiences of the year. I’ve had so many playthroughs of Downwell within my twenty hour run where I’d dive, but meet my demise before I’ve even been able to reach to the boss. ![]()
